Netflix
vs.
Disney Plus

Introduction

          With the advance of science and technology, streaming service are being more popular recently. Another reason is that Covid-19 forced people to stay at home doing all the entertainment events. Streaming service is the technology that the user doesn’t have to download the video in the hardware before watching. All we just need is the Internet. OTT service (Over-the-top media services) is the most attractive service in streaming services including YouTube, Netflix, Disney Plus, etc. As everybody knows, Netflix and Disney Plus are two rivals in this field. In this project, we are going to compare Netflix and Disney Plus in different aspects, membership, video sources, and customer sources.

MEMBERSHIP

          Let’s talk about membership in Netflix and Disney Plus. Both have different subscription prices in different countries. Here, we share about the US, Taiwan, and some special countries. First, Netflix has three pricing plans that we can choose from, Basic Plan, Standard Plan, and Premium Plan.

        All of them can watch on TV, iPad, and iPhone. In the US, Basic Plan needs $8.99 per month (NT $270) and allows you to stream on a single device at a maximum resolution of 720p, or high definition. Then the Standard Plan costs $15.49 per month (NT $370) and allows you to watch on two devices simultaneously with a maximum resolution of 1080p, or full high definition. The last Premium Plan costs $19.99 per month (NT $460) but you can stream on four devices (perfect for families) at a maximum picture quality of 4K ultra-high definition.

        While every country costs different price in these three pricing plans, especially Netflix subscriptions are the most expensive in Switzerland, at 16.90 Swiss francs (about $18.33) for the standard plan and Turkey has the cheapest Netflix subscription, at 34.99 Turkish Lira (about $4.05) for the standard plan. It will change sometime because of the exchange rate.

         Second, Disney Plus has two pricing plans. First individual plan, distinguished to pay per month or year. In the US, it cost $7.99 (NT $199) per month and $79.99 (NT $1990) per year. Another package plan, including Disney Plus, Hulu, and ESPN+ cost $13.99. ESPN+ offers live sports and sports content. However, the package plan isn’t offered in Taiwan right now.

         Besides, Disney Plus cost differently in every country too. As a statistic, Brazil cost $27.9BRL which equates to approximately $5.26. Although, in India, it cost 299 Indian rupees per month, which is equivalent to about $4.03. This price is much cheaper than in other countries because Disney Plus’s market strategy in India is to enter the market at a lower price to attract more users. It’s worth mentioning that a Disney+ subscription in India also includes Disney+ Hotstar, a popular streaming service with Indian content.

VIDEO SOURCES

        Next, let’s talk about video sources. Netflix mainly cooperates with companies playing licensed videos that come from the whole world, for instance, Korean dramas, TV series, and movies. Most special is Netflix spends money on making original movies. This is one of the reasons why people love Netflix. Disney Plus has incredible video sources that come from Disney company, including Disney, Pixar, Star Wars, Marvel, and Nation Geography.

CUSTOMER SOURCES

Subscribers of Number

          In terms of customer sources, they show various results for the highest subscribers, the trend of how the subscribers grow, and the different years that they started.

          As we can see in the bar graph (Fig.1 & 2), until 2022 Q4, Netflix got approximately 230 million subscribers worldwide, and Disney Plus got 164.2 million subscribers worldwide. Although Netflix was set up in 2013 and Disney Plus was established in 2020 that means Netflix had been run for many years more than Disney Plus. Obviously, Netflix got more subscribers than Disney Plus, but Disney Plus has dramatically increased in recent years.

          The above Figure.1 is about the tendency of Netflix. It started in 2013 and it grew just a little bit in every season also the slope keeps rising a little through 2018 Q3. However, from 2019 Q3 to 2020 Q3, the slope got bigger and bigger. It makes me remind to the Covid-19. Covid-19 exploded at the end of 2019 until now. It exactly overlaps the same time with Netflix. When Covid-19 outbroke, people were asked to stay at home. Apparently, all the entertainment events had to do at home. That is the time why Netflix subscribers grow up quickly.

          After understanding the subscribers of the whole world, we see what country has the most subscribers.

          The figures (Fig.3 & 4) show that the top three countries of Netflix are the United States, Brazil, and the United Kingdom. The top three of Disney Plus are India, the United States, and Brazil. The United States has 6.7 million subscribers on Netflix and 42 million subscribers on Disney Plus. Totally, the US occupies the top 1 ranking in terms of customer sources, which is much more than the number of the second-ranking, India. Also, most of the country gets more subscribers on Netflix than Disney Plus except India.

          Why India has the most subscribers on Disney Plus? India is a special country in that it’s got a lot more subscribers on Disney Plus than on Netflix. It started when Disney acquired Twenty-First Century Fox. Although, Fox had serviced Star India before it got acquired by Disney. So, when Disney acquired Fox, it merged Disney and Hotstar into Disney plus Hotstar. Disney plus Hotstar mainly provides Southeast Asian Countries. Different from Western countries, it provided one more channel for Indian Premier League (IPL). IPL is the sports game that almost the whole of India is concerned about. They follow the games so that is why the subscribers are that high.

         Netflix is available in more than 190 countries and Disney Plus is available in almost 107 countries. There are some countries that Netflix can’t support such as China, Crimea, North Korea, Russia, and Syria. Then, some countries are unavailable for Disney Plus such as Pakistan, Cuba, Sudan, Afghanistan, Madagascar, Kenya, Uganda, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Cyprus, Bhutan, Ghana, and Syria, among others.

          In conclusion, Netflix and Disney Plus have many different places, for example, price and video sources. It can’t compare that which is better or not. Each of them can service different subscribers, so think about what you really suit for or you can try both of them.
